This fairtrade necklace is made with with one black glass bead with flower designs and two plain black beads. It was carefully hand-crafted by Tibetan refugees in India, using Murano glass from Italy.
The bracelet is strung on black thread (so it's all vegan) with a series of knots crafted next
to the beads and then another series of knots a bit higher up. The necklace is fastened using a metal screw fastener at the back. The total length of the necklace is about 50 cms
The reason for selling these products on our website is the following. During a three-week stay in Dharamsala, India in August 2007, we had the oportunity to get to know several Tibetans. Tibetans are the friendliest and nicest people we've ever met and we became good friends with many of them.
Thousands of Tibetans escape from China every year, fleeing from political oppression and lack of religious freedom. Unemployment among Tibetan refugees in India is particularly pressing and therefore a glass bead making project was set up in 2004 to help create jobs.
Through this project, workers get paid a fair salary for their work, allowing them to cover all their food, shelter and basic expenses.
We want to support Tibetan refugees by selling their jewellery on our website. All profits from the sales of these items will go to develop a new income generation project, jointly with the Tibetan Unemployment Co-operative Society in Dharamsala, India.
